Summer Drinks

May 20, 2011

In the summer of 2009 our drink of choice was the Mojito. 2010 was the summer of the Gin & Tonic. This summer? I think I’ll have an Americano and the mister will have a Negroni.

As always, when it begins to warm up outside and the sun sets later, we stretch out our evenings until the sun goes down – trying as hard as we can to avoid going inside. We make most of our meals on the grill and spend more time walking, working in the yard, or just sitting together on the front porch reading books or talking. Summer evenings always feel like a little break from reality. And with a nice summer drink in hand, our summer evenings can feel a lot like vacation.

Camapari gives the Americano a grapefruit-y bite that I love, but the citrus is too strong for Regan so he prefers the Negroni for the taste of gin that takes off the citrus-y edge.

Americano

1 oz sweet vermouth
1 oz Campari
splash of club soda

Pour over a nice, large ice cube and garnish with an orange or lemon peel

Negroni

1 oz sweet vermouth
1 oz Campari
1 oz gin

Pour over a nice, large ice cube and garnish with an orange peel

Sip slowly on the front porch with your favorite person.

At some point, I will have to try an Americano. Don’t think I’d like the Negroni (partially because I don’t know how to pronounce it and partially because gin tastes like pine cones)!

Campari vs. Aperol — please discuss.

Oooh. I’ve not actually had Aperol, but based on my research I think I’m going to have to give it a try. With a higher sugar content than Campari, and what seems to be a bit more fruit infusion, I’d love to taste it! Thanks, Hilary.

I expect a full review of their comparative qualities 🙂

Brilliant! Never heard of these, will have to try. Miss having mixed drinks – we sorta stick to beer around here. 🙂

Sounds like a great way to spend the day. Never heard of these drinks before. Might have to venture out and try these drinks some summer day/evening with James.

We need to clean off our front porch. It would be nice to use ours for summer drinks.
